I have always been a great lover of art, and am very fortunate to have a wonderful and well-respected art museum in the very city I call home. For the most part, I prefer oil canvas paintings, and I have a number of favorite artists and paintings from this medium. The reality of the matter is that most of the great works of art are oil canvas paintings, and they feature some of the most elaborate and powerful scenes and objects that the world has ever known!
Let’s start out with probably my favorite of all oil canvas paintings, and that is Salvador Dali’s famous work “The Persistence of Memory.” This works depicts a number of clocks and other objects in a distorted manner, including a melting pocket watch, and is certainly open to interpretation when it comes to its actual meaning. One that I have heard that I always found fascinating was that Dali was representing an understanding of the world as depicted by Albert Einstein’s special theory of relativity. The painting was created in 1931, so the times do seem to fit.
I am also a big fan of “The Scream,” by Edvard Munch. This particular painting portrays a man, standing on a bridge or boardwalk, holding his ears with an extremely startled expression on his face. As oil canvas paintings go, this is one of the world’s most popular, and the genesis of this work is that Munch suffered from mental issues his entire life, and one day while he was out on a walk with a couple of friends, he heard a blood-curdling scream, dropped to one knee and covered his ears. His friends kept right on walking, and once they realized that he was no longer with them, they stopped and turned around. The story goes that they were both confused as to why he was doing that, and he asked them if they hear the scream. Neither one of them had, and that moment would be immortalized by the painting of the famous work of art. In many ways, “The Scream” was autobiographical.
I am also a big fan of Monet’s “Water Lilies.” I have to say that I typically don’t care for anything that Monet does, really, but I do like this painting. The painting depicts its namesake, water lilies, in a pond somewhere in France, and again is among the more popular oil canvas paintings in the world.
I think oil canvas paintings are my favorite medium of artwork. They are among some of the best works of art in the world, and they endure.
